Today, I want to share a few tips and strategies before you guys sit for your MUET examination (SPEAKING TEST) on this coming Tuesday, 19 Feb 2013 and I’m also gonna sit for it. So, we should do a lot of speaking practicing among our group discussion.
    Check this out !

“ Making and Giving Opinions / Suggestions (group) and Turn-Taking Strategies ”

    TIPS :

        1) When you are in a group discussion, remember that you have a role to play. You are expected to contribute your ideas, opinions and suggestions.

    2) Do not keep quiet and expect someone else to do the talking for you. Do not dominate the discussion either.

    3) Make sure others are given a chance to speak. Sometimes you may need to initiate or mediate the discussion. You need to do this when you find some members in the group keeping quiet or others dominating the discussion.

    STRATEGIES :

When you are in a group discussion, you need to take turns to speak. Here are a few strategies which you can use :

Strategy 1 : Be alert and focus on the discussion.

Strategy 2 : Listen for discourse markers such as finally, lastly, that’s about all, that’s what I want to say, in conclusion etc.

At this point, the speaker is likely ending his sentence, thus you may join in the conversation using several expressions :
    • May I add on to the point ?
    • May I say something ?
    • Excuse me, I have something to say.
Strategy 3 : Invite other members to say something if they keep quiet.
You could ask questions such as :
    • Would you like to say anything ?
    • Would you like to begin now ?
    • What is your opinion on this ?
    • What do you think about.... ?
Strategy 4 : You may politely interrupt someone who doesn’t allow others a chance to talk.
You could use the following expressions :
    • I know you have many good ideas, but could we listen to…
    • Excuse me, could we listen to…
    • Excuse me, I believe it is Camilia’s turn now.
** That's all I can share with you guys. Hopefully, you guys can perform well on that day. Best of luck from me.
